MGH Sports Medicine 2009 Conference

I am pleased to announce that the final agenda has been announced for the 2009 Annual Sports Medicine Conference conducted by Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.  The program will be held June 14-16, 2009 at the Park Plaza hotel in Boston.

This year I am co-director of the program with Thomas J. Gill, MD (Chief of Sports Medicine at MGH and Medical Director of the Red Sox and Patriots) and William E. Palmer, MD (Director of Imaging at MGH) and we are adding an “Advances in Rehabilitation” component to the already prestigious conference.  I am proud to have progressed this far, as I have always thought that multidisciplinary courses, such as this, have such a significant impact on physical therapists, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning, and other rehabilitation specialists.  It gives us an exciting opportunity to interact with colleague in other fields such as orthopedic surgery and radiology.

The conference will be broken down into different topics including Knee, Ankle, and Hip.  There will be special breakout session for radiology of bone, cartilage, and muscle, a special session on the elbow and shoulder with emphasis on throwing injuries, and a rehabilitation breakout session that includes live hands-on lab time!

The faculty is made up of several members of the Harvard Medical School Faculty including:

  • Thomas J. Gill, MD – Co-Director
  • William E. Palmer, MD – Co-Director
  • Michael M. Reinold, PT, DPT, ATC, CSCS – Co-Director
  • Peter Asnis, MD
  • Richard deAsla, MD
  • David Berger, MD
  • Thomas Holovacs, MD
  • Tara Lawrimore, MD
  • Scott Martin, MD
  • Edgar Savidge, PT, DPT
  • George Theodore, MD
  • JP Warner, MD
  • Scott Waugh, PT, ATC

There are also several guest speakers including:

  • Hollis Potter, MD – Hospital for Special Surgery, New York, NY
  • Kevin Wilk, PT, DPT – Champion Sports Medicine, Birmingham, AL
  • Bryan Kelly, MD – Hospital for Special Surgery, New York, NY
  • Brian Busconi, MD – UMASS Medical Center,  Worchester, MA
  • Eric Cressey, MS, CSCS – Cressey Performance, Hudson, MA

I am really excited about the rehabilitation breakout sessions that include lab sessions on:

  • Clinical examination of rotator cuff and SLAP lesions – Wilk and Reinold
  • Training the hip and core – Cressey, Waugh, and Reinold
  • Dynamic stabilization exercises for the shoulder – Reinold and Wilk

The schedule of talks and speakers are top notch and this is a very affordable course for a 3-day conference of this magnitude.  And just like I did at the ASMI Injuries in Baseball course, I will set aside some time to invite readers of this blog to join me in conversation.  Would love to meet you!  Look forward to seeing you there!
