New Webinar – Assessing Asymmetry in Overhead Athletes

For those of you that missed my presentation at the 2010 ASMI Injuries in Baseball Course a couple of weeks ago, you are in luck!  I will be conducting my next webinar this Wednesday night and present my talk on “Assessing Asymmetry in Overhead Athletes – Does Asymmetry Mean Pathology.”

Does Asymmetry Mean Pathology???

image I was really excited about this topic and the feedback I received at the course was great.  It is not everyday that I give a talk that may go against what everyone in the room may think, but I really wanted to stir some thoughts and create discussion, which we certainly did.  In this talk I challenge some of the current thoughts behind asymmetry assessment in the overhead athlete, including:

  • Is glenohumeral internal rotation deficit (GIRD) really a problem or just the hot buzz word right now – I then propose a new definition of GIRD!
  • Does scapular asymmetry (the SICK scapula) really cause injuries?
  • I also talk about asymmetry of the elbow and hips as well
  • What to do with all this info – when to treat asymmetries and more importantly when NOT to!

I was a little nervous about giving this presentation because I may not necessarily agree with the overwhelming popular vote right now.  But after giving the talk, we had a great group discussion with some of the top orthopedic surgeons in the country during the panel discussion.

Webinar Information

  • The webinar will be Wednesday February 3, 2010 at 8:00 PM EST

Also, do my webinars never seem to be at a convenient time for you because you would rather a different time, are in a different time zone, or even in a different country?!?  Please comment on this post and let me know when you would like to see more future webinars and I will try to accommodate.

  1. Mike,

Just a thought, but it would be great if these webinars were available as an instant download so that we could access them whenever it was convenient for us. That way if we miss one, but have time in a couple of weeks to view it we could simply pay the registration fee and have access to the content.

They actually are available, all my past webinars are at AdvancedCEU.com. This one will be too!

    Thanks for the thought!
    Mike

  3. Mike,

I tried registering this am; when I was transferred to the Advanced CEU site it said my shopping cart was empty and I didn't see where to add the webinar to the shopping cart. I tried registering again and didn't get sent back to the Advanced CEU site but got a message saying "request to attend is pending approval from the webinar organizer"

Any thoughts on what I should do differently?

    Thanks

  4. Todd (and anyone else), it should be OK now, if you have registered but not paid, go to http://bit.ly/donGoP to finalize your registration. All others that need to still register just use the "register now" button above, it should work OK now. THANKS!

  5. I would love to be involved in these webinars, however, the times never work out for me on the west coast. Any possibility of posting them for us to watch later? Or having them at 8pm west coast??

  6. Mike, wish I could make this Webinar I'm sure it will be great and spark lots of good discussion. I will probably try to catch the info through AdvanceCEU to get the content.

One quick thought on assymetry. My thought is that it is probably more of a coorilation vs causation. If a person has the proper stability/mobility mix and motor control and coordination to move through the assymetry then probably okay. Obviously that is the hard part to fully tell since that requires understanding the proprioceptive and neural control through every degree of movement with varing loads placed on the system and all the contributing joints and muscles to assist with the movement pattern. That is a lot of stuff happening with great amounts of variability. Thus why my personnal thought at this time (I admit with more info my thoughts may change), I see assymetry as a coorilation to increase injury risk, but not a causation of injury or future injury.

  7. Doing these at 11:00 PM EST may be tough for me for those on the west coast!

Kory, good thoughts, I would have to say I agree, there is more to it than just posture. Let me know what you think of the talk when you watch the recording, probably available by next week.

Thanks for a great seminar and thanks for your kind words, Mike. When you demonstrated how a "normal" static assymmetry can, in fact, demonstrate symmetrical "normal" dynamic activity, I said to myself "Wow!…why haven't I thought to look at that?"

  9. I know, its not rocket science! It is hard because right now "asymmetry" is the buzz word! You summed it up well last night, thanks as always for participating.

  10. Mike,

Regarding the Assessing Asymmetry in Overhead Athletes webinar, I registered and paid for it last night, but could not get to it. I'd like to watch it now. My confirmation from advancedceu does not provide a link.

Any suggestions? Trying the link from your 2/2/10 comment above only brings me to an empty shopping cart.

  11. The webinar is now available to download at http://www.advancedceu.com/Webinars.html. John, use the contact form at the top of this page to email me please. Thanks

  12. If we attended the live webinar, can we download it without paying for it again? Is it possible to get a note taking print out of the powerpoint presentation like would be in a packet at a conference?

    Thanks
    Chad
