James AndrewsI just spent the weekend with Dr. James Andrews at the annual ASMI Injuries in Baseball Course.  One of the things we talked about was his recent release of his book, “Any Given Monday: Sports Injuries and How to Prevent Them for Athletes, Parents, and Coaches – Based on My Life in Sports Medicine.”

The book was released earlier this month and discusses a topic that is important to me as well – how to prevent youth sports injuries.

Youth Sport Injuries

Since I have known and worked with Dr. Andrews, the amount of youth sporting injuries has seemed to skyrocket!  I remember back in the late 1990’s when there was just a handful of young baseball pitchers that needed Tommy John surgery, and now Dr. Andrews often states that half his clinic is filled with injured Little League aged athletes.  In the book, Dr. Andrews quotes research from ASMI that shows a 7X increase in youth injury rates since 2000.  How about this statistic from the book:

[box type=”note” icon=”none”]Every year more than 3.5 million children under the age of 14 will require medical treatment for sports-related injuries, the majority of which are avoidable through proper training and awareness.[/box]

This is an absolute shame and the reason for Dr. Andrews to write a book at this point in his career.  In the introduction to the book, he even discusses this concept and reveals how he felt the need to write a book geared to parents, grandparents, and coaches on young athletes to help stop this rise in injuries.

Prevent Youth Sports InjuriesMore importantly, Dr. Andrews has pledged to contribute 100% of his proceeds from the book to help support the STOP campaign, the youth sports injury prevention group founded by groups such as the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the National Athletic Training Association, and the Sports Section of the American Physical Therapy Association.

Any Given Monday does not just discuss baseball, in fact it offers sound education on injury prevention for every major sport including football, cheerleading, and over 20 other youth sports.

If you are at all involved in youth sports, coaching, or dealing with parents, this is an excellent book to read and recommend to others.  Help educate the public and support a great cause by clicking below and ordering a copy of Amazon today:
