Does anyone have any recommendations on study materials or review courses for the OCS?

I also think the Ortho section of the APTA has a resource, I think I was a co-author on the shoulder section if I am not mistaken.

Evidence in Motion has a course that is taught by Eric Wilson.  I took it this past October and was very impressed with it.  It teaches you how the exam is written, how to analyze the questions to get at what they're truly asking, how to organize your studying and determine your weak points, and the most current and often cited research that you should know front and back (ie.  c-spine CPR, effective special tests of the shoulder, etc.).  It does not "teach" you what you need to know for the exam, but it does teach you where to start and how to go about studying.

I asked him during the course what he recommended to assist in your studying, and his answer was simply the course workbook, an updated copy of Dutton, and access to JOSPT.  There are several other books out there (I personally picked up Orthopedic Physical Therapy Secrets), but he said those that were most successful simply knew the basics (can you still draw the brachial plexus??) forwards and backwards.

Thanks Phil. I was looking at the EIM course, but couldn't find any info from people that took it. How do you like the PT Secrets book? My only concern was that it was published in 2006, but I don't know how much current research it includes. As for the brachial plexus…I don't know!

I am currently studying for the exam for 2013.

I have purchased the new current concepts study course from the APTA.  Seems very useful.  The things in these monographs can be applied into practice, which helps reinforcing the content.

I found a monograph for the thoracic spine/ribs which was part of the 2nd edition in 2006 here:

http://www.fearonphysicalthera…..m_send/252

There is almost no change in the new one from the monograph at the above link.  can't say the same for the other 11 monographs.

I also have the secrets book.. alot of info that is straight memorization, but seems useful.  Alot of things on red flags and basic core information on alot conditions.

I plan on trying to see if Eric Wilson is teaching an OCS prep course on the east coast this year, otherwise I will purchase the home study course to see where i am at.

I plan on reading a differnet monograph a month, read the corresponding chapters of the secrets book at the same time, and go back to my old NPTE  practice tests and do all the orthopedic questions.

i am planning on taking 5-6 manual therapy course this year… moslt IPA stuff and a neurodynamics course w/ Michael Shadlock.

All doing this while working 50-60 hrs/week and have time for wife and 7 month old son.

Good luck John, that is a lot going on!  You'll be fine, you will find you are over-prepared, but better than underprepared!

I'm currently studying for the 2012 OCS coming up in March, i feel very much behind in my studying as i figured that an 8 month old would not hinder me, i was very wrong. I always loved studying by taking practice tests and reviewing material i got wrong. Does anybody know if there are any old practice test available. I have not been able to find any, or do they never release them?

Thanks

I'm currently taking the EIM course for OCS pre study.  It's a good reference for all of body parts.  It also has weekly quizzes and a pre and post test to help you study.  I'm unsure on how studying old "tests" will help because there is so much to this test.  Good Luck.  I'll let everyone know how I did in June when I get the results.
